Check I-80 Donner Pass Conditions

Start with Caltrans’ direct Highway 80 report, then use QuickMap for chain controls, closures, incidents and camera snapshots. Check Nevada 511 before continuing toward Reno.

Conditions and controls can change during the drive. Check while parked, follow posted signs and officials, and do not use an unofficial mountain-road detour around a closure.

BEFORE YOU DRIVE

Five checks in the right order

  1. Read the direct Caltrans Highway 80 report for restrictions and closures in California.
  2. Open QuickMap, choose Options and enable Highway Information, Chain Controls, Full Closures, CHP Incidents and Cameras.
  3. Compare several camera snapshots along the Sierra corridor; one image cannot establish that the entire route is open.
  4. Check the NWS Reno winter page for forecast hazards, keeping forecasts separate from confirmed road status.
  5. If continuing to Reno, check Nevada 511 because Caltrans reporting ends at the state line.

CHAIN CONTROLS

What R-1, R-2 and R-3 mean

  • R-1: Chains are required except on passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks under 6,000 pounds with snow tires on at least two drive wheels. Vehicles using the snow-tire exception must carry chains.
  • R-2: Chains or traction devices are required except on four-wheel/all-wheel-drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. Those vehicles must still carry traction devices in chain-control areas.
  • R-3: Chains or traction devices are required on every vehicle, without exception.
  • Caltrans says R-1 and R-2 are most common and a highway will often close before R-3 is imposed.

ROUTE-SPECIFIC GUIDANCE

Tips that matter on Donner Pass

  1. Search or open Highway 80 directly; a statewide status page may include conditions far from Donner Pass.
  2. QuickMap layers are selectable. If you do not see chain controls or cameras, open Options and turn those layers on.
  3. “HT” on the QuickMap chain-control display means traffic is being held at the checkpoint because of incidents or weather; it is not a reopening-time promise.
  4. “RC” means the road is currently closed because of incidents or weather.
  5. Camera images are snapshots and update separately from incident and closure information. Check their timestamps.
  6. Check both California and Nevada systems for a Sacramento-to-Reno trip.
  7. A weather warning predicts hazardous conditions but does not by itself establish that I-80 is closed.
  8. Follow only an officially posted detour. Nearby roads may share the same storm and may not be suitable alternatives.

Use each source for the right question

Does a camera prove I-80 is open?

No. It shows one location at one captured moment. Use the Caltrans condition report and closure layers for route status.

Does AWD mean I never need chains?

No. The exact requirement depends on the control level and tires, and qualifying AWD/4WD vehicles must carry traction devices in chain-control areas.

Should I follow a navigation-app detour?

Not unless transportation officials identify it as the detour. When the pass is affected, local roads may be hazardous or closed too.
