Check Cape Hatteras Beach Access Ramp Status
NPS updates its Beach Access Status when ramp or route conditions change. Check the official status before driving, then obey the signs and symbolic fencing in the field.
NPS says on-site signage is more current than the online map. Wildlife protection, tides, erosion or storms can change access on short notice.
BEFORE YOU GO
Five checks in the right order
- Open Beach Access Status and note its displayed update time.
- Find the numbered ramp and the route segment you intend to use.
- Confirm whether access is open to ORVs, pedestrians or both.
- Obtain the required Cape Hatteras ORV permit before beach driving.
- Air down before entering soft sand and obey every closure sign in the field.
LOCATION-SPECIFIC GUIDANCE
An open ramp may not provide through access
- A ramp can be open while shoreline travel is blocked in one direction by a resource or safety closure.
- NPS strongly recommends lowering tire pressure to at least 20 psi; softer sand may require lower pressure.
- Reinflate tires before returning to normal paved-road speeds.
